Before You Notice
This little guy has been here the whole time.
A fixture in his favorite spot on the couch.
Still turning his head when I call his name.
And those same eyes that have always seemed to understand more than we could ever give him credit for.
Nothing about any of it felt like it was changing…
and then you notice.
Not just a quick look—but the kind that comes with a pause long enough to see what’s been quietly rearranging itself over time.
His face has softened.
He’s lost that scrunchy look when he stares at us.
He rests a little easier now—with a stillness that wasn’t there in the beginning.
Five years, and I can’t point to when any of it happened.
There wasn’t a single moment when he became this version of himself. It seems all those days and months just stacked up together. Walks like any other walk. TV time like all the rest. Bedtime following right behind.
Nothing ever asked to be remembered.
Until something shifts just enough to make you see it all at once.
Change doesn’t always arrive loudly, or announce itself in a way we can’t miss.
Most of the time, it doesn’t.
It settles in quietly. In the background. Just waiting.
And then one day…
there it is.
You notice.
Not with regret.
Not even with sadness.
Just with the understanding that life doesn’t move in big, obvious moments as often as we think.
It moves like this.
Right in front of us.
All along.
Talk soon…
